“An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit”

At its most basic, Ishmael is a simple conversation between two characters. At its most urgent; a cautionary tale about humanity and how we fit into the world at large. It is a piece of literature that has genuinely transformed the way I view my place in the world. When given the option to design a book or a magazine for Fall quarter, the choice couldn’t have been any simpler.
The design concept is that the book represents the character Ishmael—one half of the conversation, while the reader represents the other side. I chose to hand-letter the title to give it a more personal touch. The lettering was inspired by traveling circus’ from the early 1940’s, while the body copy was set in ITC Caslon 224, as I wanted something elegant, refined, and easy to read.
